Mr Zarif, besides holding a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, is expected to call on Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Bajwa during his one-day trip. Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Honardoost met FM Qureshi on Tuesday to discuss the hurriedly planned trip of Mr Zarif. Prices of petroleum products may increase by up to Rs13

ISLAMABAD: Prices of all petroleum products are expected to increase by up to Rs13 per litre because of steep currency depreciation and higher international oil prices. A senior petroleum division official said a summary from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) for an increase in oil prices for the month of November had reached the finance ministry. Ogra’s working paper for the price increase is based on the existing tax rates and average import costs paid by the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) in October. The finance ministry will announce the revised rates of petroleum products with the approval of the prime minister on Wednesday. Finance Minister Asad Umar has already hinted at increasing oil prices, saying the government has minimised taxes on petroleum products to protect the common man, but the prices are still going up and need to be looked into. Based on the existing rate of general sales tax and petroleum levy, Ogra has worked out about Rs13.10 per litre increase in ex-dep...

PPP slams NAB for asking SC to expunge remarks against Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has slammed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for asking the Supreme Court to expunge remarks against former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf from its judgement in the Hudaibya Paper Mills case. Former Senate chairman and PPP leader Mian Raza Rabbani on Tuesday said: “It is a matter of great concern and bewilderment that NAB asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to expunge observations from its Jan 5 judgement concerning Gen Musharraf. This action of NAB speaks volumes about its mindset and is condemned.” In a statement, he said observations made in the sixth paragraph of the judgement were a narration of historical facts in terms of actions taken by Gen Musharraf in Oct 1999. “This mindset of NAB… reflects on its ability to pursue across-the-board accountability; perhaps such a mindset is in the way of investigation not proceeding in matters in which retired officers of the armed forces are involved,” the senator remarked....

Trump wants to end birthright citizenship for some US-born babies

US President Donald Trump says he wants to order the end of the constitutional right to citizenship for babies of non-citizens and unauthorised immigrants born in the United States. The president's comments to “Axios on HBO” come amid a renewed push for hardline immigration policies before the midterm elections. Trump believes focusing on immigration will energise his supporters and help Republicans keep control of Congress. Revoking birthright citizenship would spark a court fight over the president's unilateral ability to change an amendment to the constitution. The 14th Amendment guarantees that right for children born in the US. Asked about the legality of such an executive order, Trump said “they're saying I can do it just with an executive order”. Trump says White House lawyers are reviewing his proposal. It's unclear how quickly he would act on an executive order. from The Dawn News - Home https://ift.tt/2Oc2Z5r

CJP rejects Aamir Liaquat's apology in contempt case, summons MNA to court

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday refused an apology rendered by Aamir Liaquat Hussain's lawyer in an ongoing contempt of court case, ordering the MNA to appear before the bench in person today. Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, during today's hearing, lashed out against the televangelist, saying "anyone can speak against the judiciary and insult it". The CJP asked if the additional attorney general was present in court as he had to frame the charge sheet against Hussain today. The MNA's lawyer urged the court to accept the apology as the "door to forgiveness never closes". The hearing was adjourned for a recess. In August, the SC had slapped a contempt of court charge against Hussain while taking up petitions filed by anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada, Independent Media Corporation (Pvt) Ltd, Mir Ibrahim-ur-Rehman and Najam Aziz Sethi accusing Hussain of flouting the March 28, 2017 restraining order in which he was cautioned to desist from def...

Israeli minister on Dubai visit calls for 'peace'

Israel's communications minister called for "peace and security" on Tuesday during a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as his country launches an unprecedented diplomatic push into Gulf states. "Peace and security in every state with economic and scientific progress is what guarantees a future for the coming generations," Ayoub Kara said at a telecommunications conference in Dubai. Kara's statement comes amid a diplomatic push by Israel in the mainly Sunni Gulf, which Israel sees as an ally against Shia power Iran. It follows visits by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Oman on Thursday and Culture Minister Miri Regev to Abu Dhabi at the weekend. Neither Oman nor the UAE has diplomatic ties with Israel. Normalising ties with Israel — or recognising it as a state — remains the most controversial policy debate in the Arab world, which largely boycotts Israel over its occupation of Palestinian territory. Regev, known for controversi...

Global wildlife populations fall 60 per cent as WWF declares state of emergency for natural world

Image
Conservationists have issued a demand for urgent international action after a major report uncovered an unprecedented crisis in nature that threatens to devastate the world economy and imperil humanity itself. Only a global pact on the scale of the Paris Agreement on climate change will save the natural world from irreversible collapse, the World Wide Fund for Nature said after publishing a report showing a cataclysmic decline in global wildlife populations. Global vertebrate populations have fallen by 60 per cent since 1970 as human activity destroys their natural habitats in grasslands, forests, waterways and oceans, the organisation said. Until the turn of the 20th century, humanity’s consumption of the world’s natural resources was smaller than Earth’s ability to replenish itself. But over the past 50 years expanding agricultural activity and the over-exploitation of natural resources to feed a growing world population, particularly its booming middle class, has pushed many ecosyst...
